YOUR ROUTE THROUGH THE GUIDE

Find the part you need.

If a university asks for a WES GPA, first check which report or estimate it wants. WES's course-by-course evaluation includes credit and grade conversion and a GPA on a 4.0 scale. Its free iGPA Calculator is a preview. Those are different products, and ordering or submitting the wrong one can mean repeating the process.

WES explains these distinctions in its guide to evaluation tools. Your original transcript remains the record issued by your institution; an evaluation is a separate document.

Start with the recipient's requirement

Before entering grades or paying for a report, confirm:

  • Which evaluator does the program accept?
  • Does it want an official evaluation or a self-reported estimate?
  • Which report type and destination does it require?
  • How should the report reach the recipient, and by what deadline?

Keep the program's answer with your application records. A service being available does not mean that every school, employer or licensing body accepts that report for your purpose.

Choose the right type of output

OutputWhat WES describesWhat to confirm
iGPA CalculatorA preview of an equivalent GPAWhether an estimate is acceptable
Document-by-document reportIdentification and equivalency of credentialsWhether the recipient needs course detail
Course-by-course reportCourse analysis, converted credits and grades, and a 4.0-scale GPAThe required destination and delivery method

WES also offers services for other purposes, including an Educational Credential Assessment for Canadian immigration. Do not assume that an immigration assessment is the same product as a course-by-course admissions report. Ask the recipient which service is needed.

Why a generic percentage chart cannot predict your result

A percentage has meaning within its grading system. Assigning every 90 percent an A, every 80 percent a B and every 70 percent a C ignores the original pass threshold, qualification and grading rules. This page previously offered that kind of table; it is not a reliable way to estimate a WES result.

Use the WES iGPA Calculator when an estimate is useful, and retain the country, institution and grade information you entered. An unrelated calculator cannot establish the result that WES will issue after evaluation.

An estimate is not an evaluated credential

WES states that its free tools do not replace an official evaluation. GpaWizards is an independent calculation tool and does not issue WES reports or certify academic equivalency.

Understand the arithmetic without inventing the mapping

Once the applicable grade points and GPA-bearing credits are known, a credit-weighted average is straightforward. The unresolved question is how the original record becomes those inputs.

Here is a hypothetical arithmetic example, not a WES conversion table:

CourseAssumed eligible creditsAssumed point valueQuality points
Research methods34.012.0
Statistics43.012.0
Writing23.57.0

The total is 31 quality points over 9 credits, so the example GPA is 31 ÷ 9 = 3.44, rounded to two decimals. That checks the average. It does not prove that a particular foreign grade should receive 3.5 points or that its credits should be converted to two credits.

Our guide to converting between GPA scales explains why the source and target ceilings cannot supply the missing mapping.

Prepare the records for your qualification

Use WES's required-documents tool for the relevant country and credential. WES notes that requirements vary by factors including the report type, country, education level and institution. Follow the instructions shown for your case rather than assuming an uploaded scan is sufficient.

Check that names, qualification details and dates match the records you are submitting. If the institution must send documents, allow time for that process. Use your WES account or support channel for questions about a missing or unverifiable record.

Ask about results that do not fit a simple grade table

Repeated courses: provide the complete record requested. Do not remove an earlier attempt to imitate your home institution's replacement policy unless the evaluation instructions permit it.

Pass/fail or narrative results: keep the original code or assessment and its explanation. Do not invent a numeric grade for a pass or assume every failing code is excluded. See the narrative and pass/fail transcript guide for questions to raise.

Different credit systems: verify the credit values used in the report. Copying the original number of ECTS or other units into a US-credit field is not itself a credit evaluation.

An unexpected result: compare the report with the submitted record, identify the specific course or credential in question and ask WES for clarification through its support process. A discrepancy with an online estimate alone does not establish an error.

Use the result for the task it was requested for

Submit the original or evaluated GPA specified by the recipient. Label a planning estimate as an estimate and retain the source scale. Check current fees and processing information directly with WES when preparing your timeline.

For personal scenarios after the mapping is known, use the GPA Calculator or CGPA Calculator. Save the assumptions in a separate workspace so your own plans remain distinguishable from the official report. These tools help check arithmetic; they do not decide how a credential should be evaluated.

FROM READING TO A DECISION

Apply the idea to your own record.

Keep the original grade, its scale, and the receiving institution’s policy together. A numerical comparison is useful context; it does not establish official equivalence.

Keep a question, a useful number, or the policy you need to check. Notes stay in this browser; they are not part of workspace backups.

Frequently Asked Questions

WES offers an iGPA Calculator as a preview. WES says its free tools do not replace an official evaluation. A result from GpaWizards or a generic chart is not a WES evaluation either.

WES describes its course-by-course evaluation as including credit and grade conversion and a GPA on a 4.0 scale. Its document-by-document report serves a different purpose. Ask your recipient which report it requires before ordering.

No. A table that assigns 90 percent to A and 70 percent to C does not establish an equivalent result for every education system. Use the appropriate WES tool or request clarification about your evaluation.

Check the current WES information for your destination and report type. Document delivery and verification also affect when a report can be completed; do not plan around a fixed turnaround quoted by an unrelated article.

No. The evaluation is a separate report. Keep your original grades and scale, and report whichever figure the receiving institution requests.
